The military expert of the Nedr York Times, says they prove that the Germans have insufficient reserves with which to protect the entire line, making surprise attacks at unexpected places successful, and creating the possibility of a general abandonment of the German front.

The new advance was a brilliant success of great strategic importance, occomplishing the second portion of tlu work begun in July. When wo smash ed the lines south-east of Ancre, w> failed to penetrate in the north-west. Subsequent south-easterly successes enabled yesterday’s completion. It was a magnificent victory, under most unfavourable conditions on roadless morass of treacherous mudholes.

It was a striking tribute to General Haig and the glorious army, who captured villages, including the strongest points in an elaborate sj tem of fortifications, more powerful than most of the famous former fortresses, and bringing nearer the Germans’ final defeat. Yesterday’s victory strategics \ wipes out the Beaucourt salient, aim enables‘us to continue operations on a fairly wide front.
