Shortly after leaving for Holyhead, in a heavy gale, the North-Western Railway Company's steamer Connemarra collided with the steamer Retriever outside Carlingford bar. Roth vessels sank, and only one survivor is yet reported. Many bodies have teen washed ashore on the County Down coast. The Connemarra carried 51 passengers and 80 of a crew. It is believed that all have perished. The whole of the Retriever's crew of thirteen, with one exception, were drowned. It was impossible to launch boats , owing to the hurricane. The sole survivor of the Retri.'ver I is a seaman, who drifted ashore on I iin upturned boat.
