~ brighter prospects. London, November 1. Press Association— Copyright, Australian and N.Z. Cable Association, In the House of Lords, Lord Derby made a statement regarding Mesopotamia. He said conditions had improved under the War Office control. Basra was now a hive of industry, combining American hustle with British tenacity. There was a satisfactory supply of barges. The greatest difficulty was in securing labour. He hoped to overcome this by introducing labour corps from India. Fresh meat was abundant. The troops hao full rations. The Transport and Flying Corps had been considerably reinforced. The hospital arrangements had improved. Formerly 2739 soldiers were m the hospitals weekly; now the average was 1705. The deaths formerly were 108 weekly, and now they were 39. We had assumed the mastery of the air. He looked at the future confidently.
