CENSUS RETURNS.
SHRINKAGE IN SOUTH ISLAND. Per Press Association. Wellington, November 1. The census returns already received’ indicate a decided shrinkage in the population of the South Island, witln .I a corresponding increase in the north*'>'>■ ern portion of the North Island, to ■ -i such an extent, so far, as to suggest the possibility of the South Island and West Coast constituencies being reduced by two, which will be tacked on to the Auckland district. I WAVERLEY AND PATEA. The census returns for Patea and Waverley have now been made up, and show that while the population of Patea has increased during the past live years, that of Waverley has decreased. The disadvantage may possibly be due to the call of the Empire for men, and the good response made, it being the male side of the return that is most seriously affected. The comparative returns are as follows, 1911 being shown in parentheses: — Patea: Males 485 (489), females 525 (460); totals, 1010 (910). Waverley: Males 276 (299), females 347 (327).
