Mr C. B. Barribiil, \v!io is to judge the Holstein cattle at the Manawutu Show, passed throhgh Stratford by this morning’s mail train for Palmerston.

Among those leaving Stratford by this morning’s mail brain lor the Manawatu Show were Messrs K. Jackson, C. Jackson, and W. Fletcher.

Mr W. I?. Hnscldcn S.M., who is engaged on an important itailwaj Appeal case, will not be present in his official, capacity at the Magistrates’ Court on Friday next.

Mr George Thomson, who for many years was manager of the Stratford abattoirs and who has been staging in town, left by this morning’s mail for Napier, where he holds a similar position.

Mr 11. Morrissey, who for some, years was associated with Messis Nolan and Tonka, Hawcra, and latterly with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. (states the Star), has accepted the position ol auctioneer with the well-known Manswatu firm of Abraham and Williams, Ltd. HSs many friends in Taranaki will he pleased to hear of hi s appointment, and he will take away with him the best wishes of the district as a whole. During his long connection with Hawera Mr Morrissey has always taken a keen interest in sport, and at the present time is on the committee of the Egraont Racing Club.

Messrs. G. and F. ,T. JncliStm, who; are well-known in this district are on their annual visit to Stratford, where they arc always welcomed -by a host of friends. Whether they will play bowls as usual has not yet been fixed, for one reason, that Mr F. Jackson is not in the best of health, having had throat trouble for some time, but probably this will be overcome as the summer sun shines out more consistently than of late. Mr F. J. Jackson remarked to a representative of tlie Stratford Evening Post on the changes in Stratford even during the past twelve months, and especially did he notice the advent of new business men. The visit is not altogether one of pleasure only, the brothers having business interests which bring them to Stratford, but a number of old friends are always glad to welcome such visitors.

'A cablegram was received yestei’day by Mr E. S. Rutlierfurd stating. 1 -that. Captain F. N. S. Hitchcock, of 'the New Zealand Medical Corps was killed in action in France on 21st October. Captain Hitchcock, who left New Zealand in October, 1915, saw active service at Gallipoli, where he received special mention for bravery at the Field Dressing Station, and was promoted • seonnd in command of one of the Base hospitals in Egypt, subsequently going to the front In France. The deceased officer was a young man of much promise, and especially well-known in the Whangamomona district as medical practitioner, where he endeared himself to all by his close attention to his patients. He also took a keen interest in all social functions connected with the district. Captain Hitchcock* (waa a native of London, leaving thdrertjo' go to Whangamomona.
