STOCK SALE AT OHURA.
MR NEWTON KING'S ENTERED r m,
A representative gathering of farmers and others journeyed to Ohura on the occasion of fchs Opening of Newt Oil Kliig's sale yards there Iftsi Thursday. Leaving Stratford on Tuesday evening for Whangamomona, a special train took the party to Huiiimoana next day, thence per horse-iram to Tahora. Mr Tom Moore, the genial whip, who knows every inch of the road out back, drove the party to Ohura, a distance of 30 miles. Travelling is very pleifsant throughout this charming district when the weather is in one of her amiable moods, but this necessitous trip was made when the-roads and rain did their best to dampen the spirits of the otherwise merry party, and seriously impeded the progress of the team. Th«r steeds were dead, tired at the finish, as the rain simply pelted clown every inch of the way on tile journey, which occupied', from 30 a.m. till 6.30 that evening. The sale on tho opening day (Thursday) was in every way a success, buyers being present from Opunake, Waikato, Stratford, Hawera, Wanganui, and other places. A good yarding of cattle, representing the pick of the Ohura district, which
produces some first-rate stock, realised good prices. It was a "Rodletter day" for Ohura. Prior to the, sale, Mr Newton King
made a fitting speech, outlining the future policy of his firm. Mr Rou-j
■ mayno (Chairman of the Ohura County Council) welcomed Mr ; King and his company, and expressed his. pleasure at the steps taken to open up regular sales in the district. The same evening a meeting, convened by the Ohura County Couucil, was. held with regard to the. opening of telephonic communication from Tahora to Tatu, and a resolution was s passed urging the Government to immediately take steps to have the line" opened up, it being agreed to work in conjunction with the Whangamomona County Council, Stratford County Council, and the Stratford Chamber of. Commerce, and to cooperate with all local bodies to secure the object desired.
Returning from Ohura on Friday morning in beautiful weather, the; party were able to appreciate the do-! lightful scenery. At Tatu bridge an] accident occurred to the coach through] the breaking of a spring which delayed the party for an hour. Later, when coming through the Gorge, a
i protruding root caused one of the horses to become entangled with a i chain, upsetting the other horses, and it was not until the delay of an , hour and a half that they were I able to resume their journey. I The party left Ohura at 9 o'clock-in I the morning and reached Tahora at 5;,i arriving at Whangaihomona at 6.45. Staying at Whangamoinona over night, the party v - returned ~ to Stratford by traitl on Saturday morning after a pleasant sojourn on the hinterland of a country which promises to .quickly respond to development and initiation so necessary for the.progress of a district, Apart from any commercial instinct, the party thoroughly appreciated the trip. Sales are to lie held periodically, the next one being on Thursday, 7th December, when it is anticipated that there will be a large gathering. Naturally., the farmers throughout the district appreciate the enterprise of Mr King in linking up Ohura with surrounding marketing districts.
