Over twenty battalions, including an Austrian division, Mere engaged in a furious assault on Friday gn the wooded Carpathians. The object in view was the' securing, regardless of cost, the heights east of Kirlibaba. All the attacks Were repulsed with crushing loss, one battalion being absolutely wiped out, while another had only 170 survivors out of 850 men. The Germans are ceaselessly attacking Bystritza, where the breaking of the Russian front would bring the enemy to the rear of Kimpolung and the whole of the Russian left flank.

The greatness of the stake explains the enemy's sacrifices.
