A sensation was caused by the publication of the minutes of a secret meeting of the American Independence Conference, an organisation of which the members are prominent anti-British, Irish-Americaris and German-Americans, at which a report was received, of an ultimatum which had been presented to Judge Hughes, demanding that he attack Great Britain in a public speech in exchange for support at the election. Judge Hughes admits that he conferred with the leaders of the organisation, blit denies that he entered into an agreement, although the IrishAmericans and German-Americans consider the agreement was made. The Republican managers are fearful that-the-revelation will seriously jeopardise Judge Hughes’ chances at the election. • ' '
