A miraculous escape from a serious motor-car accident occurred near ’Kohuratalii yesterday, when a car driven by Mr Percy Collins skidded off the road down a precipitous gully. Fortunately, the five occupants kept their seats and none were injured. The car was pulled out of the gully by horses and came hack to Stratford early this morning under its own I power, with a strained forecarriage and one door cracked.
The Hon. Mr Russell, in a, speech at the opening of Red Cross Rooms at Auckland (reports the Press Association) said his son had stated in a letter that among a number of German prisoners carried by the Maranta from France to England was a New Zealander trained in one of our best known collegiate institutions. Mi Russell uttered a warning to the publie against giving credence to ■ Ger-man-inspired newt, such as the coloured statements appearing in the cabled news from Home. These wore calculated to discourage recruiting bygiving the impression that it was impossible to bring Germany to Innknees. Whatever the appearance of things, the British people wore determined to see the war through to a successful peace.
