WAR SURGEON’S WORK.
HOT TIME IN FRANCE. Captain Keith Grieve 1 , A.M.C., who a,- been awarded the Military Cross, •< -Gently wrote from France:— “We were told by a senior officer ; bat there were lots of wounded in thi front line and no one men ud and •see what 1 could do. I was scared death. The shells—big ones—- '■ e*'e lobbing everywhere within a few yards of ns and just over us; everywhere, in fact, but on us. I got annoyed then, and did not care a hang, i felt wild to think that the blighters nero doing for so many of our chaps, and that no one was looking after them. Heaven knows how wo managed rue trip without a casualty, for the shells fell on all sides. We sot to ■\ork fixing the men up for some distance on both sides of ns. and made them comfortable until the bearers returned from down the sap. Ve worked all that night without stopping, and I do not know how we came out alive. I sent four .of my )6 bearers back to work in the support trench, and one of those men ivas my only casualty, though we worked without a stop for three nights and two days. My helmet w-as dinted several times with shrapael, and I thought I had stopped one piece, but it glanced off my knee. Ju those awful nights and days I couhl tell yon of a hundred close shaves, and it only shows that each shell has its ticket on it. Ti you are going to get it you will get it sure, so what is the use of worrying. My men worked like Trojans seemed possessed of tire devil, and wont without sleep or food for many hours doing j the back-breaking carrying through j heavy shell fire, cheerfully and with- j out a murmur; there was not a j growl the whole time.”
