Mr Calvert, the correspondent, 'witnessed the attempt to recapture Kaymnekchatau. The commander did not use artillery, but attacked at night with troops well primed with raw spirits. They made an impetuous rush, carrying the first line anc; wiped out the occupants, but the remaining Serbians held firm and mowed clown the intoxicated Bulgarians. The first wave reached the trenches in three hours, and there was the most horrible fighting in the trenches taken, the Serbs finally winning. Sunrise revealed a scene of bestial and savage slaughter, The ground between th'e first and second lines was covered with corpses. It was impossible to step without trampling on them. One thousand Serbs and 2000 Bulgars were killed. The wounded Serb officeis were masßacred. ALLIES' ACTIVE OPERATIONS. The High Commissioner reports:— London, October 1 (6.20 p.m.) The official report from Salonika says: Below Orjak bridge, on the Struma, we took possesion of portion of the Bulgarian lines, and the ga ; nh were extended later. Following stubborn fighting, we repulsed six counter attacks. One hundred prisoners haS* already been taken. The fighting continues.
