The friends of Mr W, H. Payntcr will he pleased to learn that Jtiftar, the operation at the Hospital recently, he is now progressing favorably.
Lieutenant Gray, of the Defence Department, left by this morning's train to report at Palmerstou North, headquarters of the Wellington Military District, prior to taking up his new appointment. Lieutenant Graj expects to return to Stratford for » few days shortly, when he will complete his,business arrangement-;.
Many friends in this district will hear with a sense of personal loss of 'the s denth of Mr T. C\ Higgmson, who for about eighteen months was at Makahu and Strath mo re and on the outbreak of war went to*England and obtained a lieutenancy in the Grenadier Guards. It was only on Saturday last that Mr 11. E. Ahrah.uu received a letter from Lieutenant Rigginson, in which he spoke cheertjully of his' doings in. Franco. The lejttot .was'couched in the most hdpetul terms regarding the great push 'and the spirit of the Allied troops generally. It may be worthy of mention that Lieutenant Higgiuson was first cousin to Lieutenant A. de B. Brandon, of Wellington, who succeeded'in bringing down the first German Zeppelin down in British territory.
