STRATFORD COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Stratford County Council was held on Wednesday morning in the County Conned Chambers. There wore present : Crs Hiathaway (chairman), Baskin. 1 Worth ingtcm, Walter, Were, Colcm ••n, Christofi'el, Anderson, and Smith. ENGINEER'S REPORT. North Riding.—The Denbigh road has been put in fair order with about 700 cubit: yards of boulders, re-facing about half a mile; also re-faced about twenty chains with pit metal from Mr Carroll's pit, which works out at ; ' s 6d per cubic yard (royalty free) ; as soon a- the light roller is available, 1 will have this road rolled ; the culvert tin this road by Mr Rutledge's has been lowered. The Collett crasher is now working on the Monmouth'road. The Stanley road bridge is now completed ; the profiling from this bridge has been sold for £23 7s 6<l The Makino steel bridge has been scraped and tarred. The drain by Mr Kerris' property has been made safe. South Riding.—The excavation for the tar-boiler is now completed. The boiler will be built in as soon as the bricks arrive. The roads generally are in good order. A start has been made with the Mountain road boulder con- i tract.

East Riding—A start has been made with the cottage verandahs at Toko and Douglas. Stocks and O'Connor have commenced the Toko road east contract.

West 1 Riding.—The Acme crucher has completed the crushing on Opunake No. 3, and is now on the Manaia road. J. Neilson is engaged with the Mangatoki stone. Huiroa Riding—Advantage has heen taken of the fine weather, and much dray work has been done, Mangaehu Riding—This riding is being worked short handed at the present time. A portion of , the stable from Puniwhakau has been taken to Tututawa to be re-erected at this end of the riding. General.—The tar-sprayer made by Mr J. Hopkins, of Hawera, has arrived, arid in every particular looks to be a very well-finished plant; a trial will be made during the week. Re tenders—the committee appointed met and accepted a number of tenders, and one has since been let at a satisfactory price. I regret to state that Foreman J. Kovaleski, of the North Riding, has found it necessary to tender his resignation. I have therefore called applications for the position. CORRESPONDENCE. The Recruiting Board,, AVellington, forwarded a booklet entitled "Call of the Camps." This book is for distribution throughout the Dominion, and gims to, t>hoße/not ne.aj; the training ground some idea of the life in the training camp, and the processes which transform the recruit into the trained soldier. It is believed the book will prove especially interesting to the parents of soldiers of our Expeditionary Force.—Received. Waimate 1 County Council asked the Council's influence to have the anomalous railway charge on tar and tar preparations for roadworks amended, and pointing out that the railway charge referred to is a handicap on progressive local bodies, and it should only be necessary to point it out in order to have the classification amended in this particular instance.—Agreed to. A. W. Mellow (Rowan), on behalf of settlers protested against the state of Upper Rowan Road. He pointed out that there is evidently a shortage of stone, but if there were any wet days, the road referred to would be impassable. He asked that the Chairman and the Engineer meet him so that something be done before the crusliji' is shifted.—Received.

Norman G. G. Winkelmann, engineer and machinery broker, enquired re hire of steam lorry.—Left in the Hands of the Engineer. New Zealand Counties Association wrote stating that owing to unusual circumstances, no annual meeting would oe held, and the Council would be notified of the next meeting.—Received.

A petition from ratepayers owning | property on Hill Road (just off War- \ wick Itoad) requested that the road should be formed and a gravelled footpath made to their residences. Their rates had been paid, hut no work had been done to the road.—Cr s Coleman and Christoffel to report. The Stratord A. and P. Association wrote re the establishment of a Model Daily Farm in this district. To further the proposal, representatives of local bodies and dairy companies are invited to meet at the A. and P. Office, on Saturday, 7th October, at 1 o'clock, and a delegate was asked to be, appointed from the County Council. —CV Walter said the Council could not do better than appoint Cr Weir as delegate. "I do not believe in a Model farm altogether," said Cr Walter; "what we want to teach our folk is to run a good paying farm,not a Model farm." Cr Baskin seconded the motion, which was unanimously agreed to. J. A. Shrimpton (Mahoe) asked that a short portion of the Upper Palmer Road be metalled. There was a small unmetalled portion also requiring attention at the top of the road, which was impassable. Tt was resolved to include the work in next year's estimate. John Kovaleski (Tuna), resigned his position as road foreman of North Hiding. Shrimpton (Mahoe) asked to have metal crashed for Uppjr Hastings Road, and to sell him 25 yards of metal.—Received. W. F. Clemow (.'Brecon Road), stated that he understood that the settlers on Brookes Road were making a request for a special loan to repair that ■ road and Brecon Road South. The writer considered it would be unfair to be rated when they bad no interest in it- A special rate should be struck on the whole of the West Riding instead of punishing one road.—Received. Kovaleski, resigned. Daniel Brosnahan, of Waitara, was appointed foreman of the Puniwhakau Riding. The resignation of Foreman Watkins was accepted with regret, and applications are to be called for the position. It was resolved that the Engineer be instructed to see that all men employed by the Council be register-1 ed under the Military Service Act and that they produce a certificate of such enrolment. DEPUTATION. S. A. Mann waited on the Council and asked that the dip in the Upper Manaia Road should be filled in.— The Council decided to expend £lO on the work. HOLIDAY FOR PERMANENT MEN. It was resolved that all permanent men in the employ of the Council be granted one Saturday off each month at the discretion of the Engineer. NOTICE OF MOTION. O. Smith gave notice to move at the next meeting of the Council: "That a vote of censure ,> passed upon Cr. Christofi'el, while acting as chairman, for his unfair and biassed ruling on August IGth in the discussion of County matters.'' ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £1721 3s (id wvvo passed for payment.
