PEMBROKE ROAD.
At a farewell to. Corporal Cuthbert on Friday everting last, Lieutenant Gray who was present explained at considerable length the working of the Military Compulsory Service Act, and in doing so he cleared up an\ misconceptions that may have been formed in interpreting its various clauses. Lieutenant Gray is a soldier, and in dealing with military matters he knows no sentiment, hence he placed before his listeners in an emphatic and proper manner the duty of every single man. Though the Lieutenant has all'' the qualities that make the soldier*! fWvas apparent from what ho told us 'he'had seen on the Stratford railway platform and how it influenced him, that he possesses the finer'emotional nature that is so essential to the make up of character. He said he had seen sad partings and among them, mothers sobbing out farewells, while little children •in their arms were waving their hands and crying out, as the .train moved away, "Good-bye, daddy." At the same time there were standing on the platform eligible single men who were not put to shame by the sight of these fathers parting with every earthly endearment to go out and fight for single slackers at home. The point the Lieutenant made was that there is now a last way of escape for eligible single men to save themselves from an indelible stigma, and that way of escape is to go to-morrow to the Defence Office and seal their allegiance by taking the oath of fealty. inn fnrnwell given to Corporal Cnihbcrt last Friday evening, like j-.il ethers given to our local boys, was a prroat success and he has every reason to remember it with pleasure.
