I EITHAM BOWLING CLUB. At the annual meeting of the Club on Eriday night, the chairman i.vlr G. 1). Gun) reported that the prospects for the coming season were novery promising. They had lost members owing to the war, and also th.ough the departure oT several from tb,- district. The finances were about ili> in- behind. The balance-sheet -.bowed the expenditure for the year to b** £75 ids 3d. 'Then' was a credit or lance ot over £65 ol assets ovcm Facilities. Carman; secretary and treasurer, the filling of this office was left to the committee to deal with; delegate to Taranaki centre, Mr J. Ure Murray. Some discussion ensued as to whether, it was hotter that the selecting should he carried out by one man or by a committee, but the meeting filially decided to continue the system of one selector. The choice of the meeting fell upon Mr Stanners. BANNER MATCHES. A communication was received from the Stratford Chib with reference to the banner matches. The letter stated that the centre had resorted to the old system of playing the banner matches in sections, Hawera, Eltliam, and Stratford being in the one section. The Stratford club did not wish to continue in the competition under these conditions and was willing to withdraw providing Eltham and Hawera did the same. Members generally agreed that owing to the small membership, set fixtures were rather awkward for it often happened that at the time ap- j pointed for matches it wa s impossible ] to get the team away. The minimum number of rinks from each chib in the competition was three. Speakers favoured matches by challenge, as they could play when they pleased, and everyone who desired could get
a game. It wa s decided, on the motion of MessrsCarman and McKay, to inform the Stratford Club that the Eltham Club were willing to withdraw from the banner matches. OPENING THE SEASON. The groundsman reported that the green required a lot of rolling, and so far as he could say at present, the green would be ready for play about the middle of next month. An invitation to he present at the opening of the Stratford green, which takes place on Wednesday, October 5, was received from the Stratford Bowling Club.—(Abridged from the Argus). Hawera green is to be officially opened for play on Wednesday, October -Ith. 'Tin Hawera Star states: It seems tic -, will be no banner competition in ibe Southern division. Stratford is considering withdrawal, and Eltham apparently has definitely decided to withdraw. Hawera Club is in favor of continuing the competition, but will be the only club left in the Southern division. No adequate reason for abandonment of the competition has been given, and it seems a pity in the absence of good reasons that there should be a withdrawal. The clubs, it is assumed, expect to play inter-club matches. Why should these matches not lie made banner matches with a definite interest Especially may this question be asked in view of the fact that the regulations made by the Centre are designed to nu et the circumstances of every club, whether large or small. Pihama has a hare twelve members left in the club, but its delegate said they would play even if they had to put in novices.
