—— Weather Forecast.—The indications are for southerly moderate to strong winds prevailing. Weather probably cool and changeable, and there is a prospect of line weather, days bright and nights cold. Barometer rising.—■ Bates, Wellington. The Cardiff Dairy Company is now purchasing calves’ veils for rennetmaking. and has made special arrangements with Mr Newton King for delivery to be taken of veils at his Stratford Hide and Skin yards, on behalf of the Company.
Final arrangements having boon completed, every indication points to the fancy dress and “hard-up” social to ho held by the Stratford Volunteer Fire Brigade in the Town Hail on Thursday evening, as a huge success. A largo number of tickets have already been disposed of and the brigade is assured of receiving hearty public support.
A Press Association telegram from Wellington states ;—The enquiry into the loss of the steamer Stormbird at the mouth of the Wanganui river was 1 concluded on Saturday afternoon. The Court completely exonerated the master, Captain Gibson. The Crown pays the costs of the enquiry.
It is understood that Mr, J. Donald has disposed of his garage in Broadway to Mr. F. Norcross, who will take over the business from October 1. Mr. Norcross, who was at one time employed by Mr. Donald, started business on bis own account some twelve months ago, but now finds that owing to the increase in trade, his present garage in Broadway North is too small.
At the dispersal sale of Mr C. A. Hopping’s pedigree Holstein cattle, at Palmerston North, a number of animals were purchased by Taranaki dairymen. Messrs Clifford Bros. (Lopperton) gave 55, 75, 32, /S, and 135 guineas for cows and 76 and 51 guineas for yearling heifers ] Mr R. 1. B. Mellow (Kaponga) paid 50, 40 and 45 guineas for cows; and Mr G. A. Marchant (Cardiff) purchased cows at 13 and 50 guineas and a yearling heifer at 28' guineas. For hulls, Mr JGibbs (Alton) gave 49 and 30 guineas, and Mrs Morrow (Rahotn) 190 gum-
