THE MERCANTILE MARINE.
C!FTS TO TRANSPORT MEN. Per Press Association. Wellington, September PI. The following memorandum was issued by the Governor to-night; “Tbero are some 11.00 officers and men of the mercantile marine who arc employed in transports and hospital ships which convey our New Zealand soldiers from and to our shores, and it has struck me that while we are making arrangements to send some gift or remembrance to our men at Christmas, we ought to hoar these sailors in our thoughts. There is no need on my part to state how arduous arc the duties imposed on them, and while not desiring to ■ make a general appeal I make this suggestion that if anyone would like to make some gift to these men at Christmas they should send me lialf-n-crown for this purpose between this date and September 30th, and I will send a personal acknowledgment of all such contributions. It is obviously more convenient to send money rather than gifts in kind, principally because as everyone knows, ships are scattered over a very wide area, and 1 propose to divide the money thus collected among all ships in proportion to the numbers of the crew, sending it to the master to apportion in such a way that the men will all get some recognition from the Dominion.” (Signed), Liverpool.
