The Daily Telegraph's Madrid correspondent states that Senor Antonio '. Maura, in a speech at Santader, said he believes the interests of Spain, England, and France are reconcilable. He considers that an Anglo-Franoo-Spanish Alliance is natural and unavoidable. The speech caused consternation among the pro-Germans. A DESIRE TO TAKE SIDES WITH THE ANGLO-FRENCH. Senor Maura's address was delivered before a Conservative Congress of six thousand delegates from all parts of Spain. Senor Maura added: "Spain cannot wait until the war ends before taking sides. It is indispensable that France and England should not be hostile to Spain." Senor Maura expressed a desire to return to power and solicited the Conservatives' co-operation. The speech caused an enormous sensation in Spain, because the majority of Maurists are Germanophile, but Maura's prestige in Spain is firmer now than ever. ENEMY PROPAGANDA OF LIES. Lord Northcliffe after visiting Spain, states that a widespread German propaganda has convinced the Spaniards of Germany's invincibility and ultimate success. The Spanish Church, aristrocracy and court officials support the German cause. There are 80,000 German refugees, who are everywhere favourably received. A wireless message daily floods the country with lies, while there is the most amazing ignorance regarding the Allies, particularly Britain, which is due to our failure to meet and confute the propaganda.
