STRATFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Stratford Borough Council was held last night, when there were present: Bis ( Worship the Mayor (Mr J. W. Coon), and Crs \V. H. H. Young, A. 1). Stanley, J. H. Thompson, G. W. Mills, I'. I Bauson, S. B. Hunter, C. B. Walsh, and A. T. Davey. The Mayor briefly welcomed Cr Walsh to the Council table. After other Councillors had spoken in a similar strain, Cr M : alsh replied. CORRESPONDENCE. Tint secretary of the Taranaki Provincial War Belief Association | wrote applying for permission to have a telephone installed in the Association’s office in the Municipal Buildings.- Granted. j J. K. Stone wrote asking the Council to allow him the cost of painting hi, shop (,£2 7s (id). Dealt with in 1 the reserves committee report. W. W. Hodge wrote stating that he had a client who would consider a j lease of one of the vacant shops in the j Municipal Buildings, providing the 'Council would do the necessary alteration, of which he forwarded particulars. His client would take the lease for five to seven years at £2 us per week.—Dealt with in reserves committee' report. W. W. Hodge wrote; T am m receipt of yours of August 29th, stating that the drainage system on sections 984-0 is not in accordance with the Borough by-laws; well now, until yon can inform me as to where the irregularity exists, it is impossible for me to move in the matter. The Town Clerk reported that he had written further to Mr Hodge. B. Harkness wrote that as iron had advanced over 100 per cent., he was reluctantly obliged to advance the price of crossing plates 8s (3d each. — The Mayor moved; That beloro any more crossings were purchased, the Works Committee should bring down a report. —Carried. The District Engineer of the Railway Department wrote re storm watei from a channel on the Mountain Road .—Referred to Works Committee with newer to act.
R. K. Osborn, A. Currin, O. Morrison, (HI L. Homan, T. Lawson, and Airs Gardner (residents and property holders of Ariel Street South) wrote asking that the portion between Celia Street and Lear Street be formed and metalled. During the wet weather it was unfit for traffic.—Dealt with in Works Committee report.
ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Engineer (Mr T. D. Sullivan} reported on the progress of works lor the past month as under: Metal patching has been done on various streets. Culverts have ncen inserted in the following places: Across footpath Broadway south of Opunake Hoard; across footpath, Hamlet street, opposite Mrs Evans’ uroperty ; junction of Olivia and Hamlet street; Pembroke Road at its junction with Brecon Road. Crossings have been made to the following properties: Mr Wilson’s, Regan Sueet west, E. Kirkwood’s, Cordelia Street, crossing extended lor Mr J. H. fhoinp. sou, Olivia Street, crossing gravelled for Mr Lilley, Pembroke Road. Iron crossings have been inserted ; One opposite Municipal Buildings; one rt entrance to Salvation Army Hall. Pen ton Street; a 30-ft. iron crossing ha - been put in opposite new entrance to railway station from Broadway. The footpath fronting this crossing has been excavated to a depth of six indies and replaced with concrete, composed of six to one, the Railway Department paying the whole cose of this work. The footpath fronting Miss Harding’s residence, Miranda Street, has been repaired as authorised. Footpaths have been repaired m several places. Water tables have been cleaned out on Broadway, Regan, and Juliet Street. Reserve fence has been repaired in Ariel Street. Six hundred and forty-four cubic yards of stone have been crushed during the month. One water service and one sewer connection have been put in during the month. Mr Currin has made application to have his property in Broadway North connected to the Borough Sewer, the work will be carried out hi due course. WORKS COMMITTEE. The committee reported us follows: A letter has been received from residents in Ariel Street South asking that the street be formed and metalled between Lear and Celia Street. — Your committee recommend that the applicants lie advised that the work required cannot be done this year outof revenue, the estimated cost be ing £79. Your committee have inspected that portion of Portia Street South on which Messrs Fitzgerald and others I require certain work done. The estimated cost is £l4 os, and we recomj Im >nd that this work he authorised to jbe done when convenient. CorporaI tion Yard.—-Vour committee are in communication with the Domain Boaid on this subject, and wil report further at the Council meeting.—Adopted. RESERVES COMMITTEE. ABATTOIR COMMITTEE. The committee recommended as under : That No. I paddock he ploughed and sown with. Algerian oats, the crop to he kept for use of Council s horses, that a truck of lime he procured, and that after the crop is 'taken off, the paddock be sown down ; with good English grasses. That the matter of ploughing ami sowing the paddock and procuring the necessary material be left in Mr Spilman s hand; with power to act.—Adopted. ABATTOIR MANAGER’S REPORT. The manager (Mr A. M. Spilman) reported as follows: The following stock were slaughtered: Cows 77, heifers Id. oxen (3, calves 2, sheep 253, pigs 25. Slaughtering tees amounted to £SB 18s 9d. Stock condemned; Cows, 2 wholly, 2 partially; heifers, 4 wholly, 1 partially; oxen, 1 wholly, 1 partially.. LIBRA R V COMM ITT EE. The commit Lee recommended that the following periodicals he obtained for the use of the library subscribers; Lady, Ladies’ Field, Ladies’ Homo Journal, and Delineator, the cost per annum will he £-1 us (3d.-—Adopted. B()ROUGH INSRECTOR ’ S REP<>BT. The Borough Inspector (Mr G. E. Bowers) reported that the Town Hall was lot on four nights’ during the month. ITe renewed eight street lights, some of which v.;,ero badly fused owing! no doubt, to the electrical storms recently experienced. Three by-law eases were heard in Court. He had been engaged gathering names lor the Borough Military Roll, which he bad not yet completed.—Received. GENERAL. The Engineer was authorised to purchase grass seed and u truck of drainage pipes. A committee, consisting of Crs Young and Davey, was appointed to confer with the Engineer re purchasing oats with power to act. The Town Cleric reported that he had inspected the sale yards, and there were one 'or two had portions. The matter was now being attended to. Cr Lawson said that Ariel Street between Cloton Road and the river was in a very bad state owing to eontractors’ carting stones out of the river. The road was full of cart ruts, and as it was the entrance to the bowling green, and was used very frequently, the matter should receive attention. The matter was left to the Works Committee with power to act. Cr Mills said he had met a traveller on Saturday, who wanted a sample room, and he had to wait until Wednesday before one was vacant. He suggested that the vacant shops be let as sample rooms until leased. A motion accordingly was seconded by Cr Walsh, and carried. Mr G. H. Eox was granted the use of the Town Hall for- a dance to be held on Thursday next at a rental of £2, provided the gathering disperses at 10.45. Accounts amounting to £ll4 9s 6d were passed for payment.
