In the Assembly Mr Holman, in delivering the Budget, stated that the year’s revenue amounted to £191,629,000, the actual surplus being £149,590. He stressed the fact that but for the war expenditure amounting to £513,000 the surplus Avould havo been £550,000. Of the surplus £59,000 Avas due to increased taxation. During the last six years the GoA'ernment has raised £12,800,000 by direct taxation. The total loan expenditure for the same period was forty-one millions. It Avas proposed to supplemen disabled soldiers’ pensions and make the amount £3 Aveekly, Melbourne, September 6. In the Assembly, Mr Peacock announced the abandonment of a referendum on the earlier closing of hotels, as it Avould clash Avitb the conscription issue. The Government proposed to adopt direct legislation in place of a referendum. Brisbane, September 6. In the Legislative Council the Honi Mr Hamilton stated that the Government bad received a request from Senator Pearce to take action regarding the early closing of hotels.
