SUPREME COURT.
PROFESSOR ISHERWOOD FINED. Pkk Napier, September 1. At the Supreme Court, Sir Robert Stout had before him Professor Joseph (sherwood, who was found guilty on four charges of false pretences, and who appeared to receive the Court’s sentence. Mr Dolan, addressing his Honor, said the early life of accused had been confined to a hypnotic one, and Ids life thus had been shaped for him by his brother. His remedies had made certain people better, but bo bad made a mistake in dealing with Maoris by using medicines ho Knew very little about, .it was a first offence, and there was nothing quack about him. He was prepared to make restitution. His Honor said lie recognised the cases were not those of ordinary false pretence; it was mixed up with the old belief and credulity of tlio people. Isherwood bad taken money for no tiling. No doubt some good was done, but be made the Maoris believe what was not true. He intended to hue accused under the Justice of the Peace' Act. Ho was not of tbe criminal class and therefore tbo Court would inflict a fine of £l5O, in default imprisonment until the amount was paid, such term not to exceed nine months. The sum of £l5O was paid a few minutes later, and accused was given his freedom.
