FLOTSAM AND JETSAM. Peb Prebb Absociatton. Napier, August 31. The crew from the wrecked Tongariro arrived in Napier to-day, en route, for Wellington, per Westralia. Seventy-eight arrived. Niue are stopping at the scene of the disaster. Many were in their night clothes, there being no time to get their effects owing to the suddenness of the alarm. A few men were slightly injured, hut none seriously. Some American negroes lost their heads and one had to bo stunned to be kept quiet. Some of the crew were immersed a long time in the water, owing to the boats upsetting. In Napier they were supplied with boots, clothing and comforts. There - was no news at a late hour of the position of the Tongariro. If the sea had been heavy all lives would have Ixjen lost. The Tongariro is almost certain to be a, total wreck. The Koutouriui arrived at Napier about 10.30 to-night with 025,000 worth of bullion in boxes, and the passengers’ and crews’ effects from the wreck.- The Tu Ata got right, alongside, as the weather was calm and salvaged the effects, 1 There is a lot of valuable cargo on board, and some may be salvaged, il the line weather keeps up. The vessel is unlikely to break up ; unless an easterly or north-easterly gale springs up. The To Aroha is leaving Wairoa to bo on the scene. Extra efforts are to bo made. Wellington, September 1.
