STATEMENTS BY THE MINISTER OF DEFENCE. Pbb Phksb Association. Wellington, August 27. The Hon. J. Allen, commenting on the London Times’ reference to conscription in New Zealand, said that be looked upoii the article as designed for political purposes. Wo have not conscripted a single man in New Zealand. There were four reinforcement drafts in camp under training, and two more were fully ready to Ik called up, all being under the voluntary system. We were thus full; able to meet all obligations in main taming the strength of our forcer oversea. It was ridiculous to suggest that New Zealand was not doing, as well under the voluntary system a any other part of flic Empire. Mr Allen also pointed out that while Now Zealand had Wen. Thus meeting Imperial obligations in the matter I men, our territorial system of training had boon kept going fully and efficiently, | Regarding the case of the deserter i who is suposed to have come from the Carterton district, the Government did not feel justified in -publishing the man’s name, pending the receipt ol details from Home, which had. been asked for. ! CARTERTON OFFENDED. RUMORS OF TROUBLE. Carterton, August 28. Residents were, very surprised on Saturday night at the visit of a strong force of police From Wellington and a picket of 73 from Ifedthorstqii Military Camp. Enquiries, plicliyd ' tiiat t!ie rumour afloat that Cartcrtui residents ami some soldiers intended to raid the former home of a man said to have deserted to the German lines. The arrival of the police and the picket .was the firs.lt intimation that anything of the kind was in the air. Everything was perfectly quiet and orderly, and no demonstration whatever way made. The military picket returned to camp at 10 o’clock on Saturday night. Three of tlie police patrolled the grounds of the house where the alleged traitor’s parents reside on. Saturday night, Sunday, and Sunday night, hut everything was quiet. The police have now left town. The rumour of the' projected not did not start in Carterton, the first intimation here being the arrival of the police. RECRUITING. STRATFORD’S RESPONSE.
