LABOR AND CONSCRIPTION. Press Association—Copyright. (Received 1 p.m.) Sydney, August 25. The Labor Council adopted a resolution by 66 to 30 reaffirming its hostility to conscription. The Council also passed a resolution condemning the speeches of Mr Holman, the Lord Mayor, and Mr Meagher at the recent Town Hwll reception to Mr Hughes, wherein they declared their readiness to support Mr Hughes', whatever his decision might be. The Council contended that Messrs Holman and Meagher did not express the views of the workers in general. Several opponents of the motions declared in favor conscription if. it was considered necessary to win the war, and they claimed that all trades unions were not against conscription.

A deputation of hotelkeepers told Mr Holman that owing to the six o'clock closing unless some positive and definite relief was granted, the publican would be faced with ruin, and would be driven to the wall. The community failed to realise that tin brunt of the position which had been brought about by the development of public opinion would fall upon the mere distributors of liquor. The cutting down of the business hours had seriously affected the volume of business, and had decreased the bartakings.

An important Federal Labor caucus meeting, at which Mr Hughes reported the result of his mission to England, resumed to-day. Conscription was one of the issues discussed. The country is anxiously awaiting the reslult of the meeting.
