At the Skeffington inquiry the chairman read the unpublished report ( by Colthurst, after his arrest, wherein lie said he didn’t think the barracks were safe for desperate men like Skeffington, Dickson and Mclntyre. He heard that GOO Germans were marching on Dublin, and that to attack the Portobello barracks. Thinking reinforcements from England would not arrive in time to avert a. general massacre, and believing he had the power under martial law, he had the three prisoners shot, regarding it as a terrible duty. 'Major Koseborough, in charge ol the Portobello barracks in his evidence said he did not know of the executions until afterwards.
