Out of nineteen applicants, Mr H. T Ainsworth, of New Plymouth, has been appointed Truant Inspector under the Taranaki Education Board.

Mr Henry Lawton, senr., one of the most prominent and well-known settlers of Clive, passed away at the Napier Hospital on Friday.

A cable from London reports that James Bavnbun Starkey, a native of Christehurch, New Zealand, and sec-ond-lieutenant of the Wiltshire*, has been killed in action.

The Education Board has confirm"! the following appointments on, school committees: \V. E. Smith to Tututawa School Commit too. in place of A. 11. Clothier resigned; C. Penwardeii, to Raliotn Committee, in place of I). Anglesey, resigned; Paul Jovgenson has been appointed commissioner at Otangiwai.

The following resignations of teachers were received by the Education Board yesterday: Mr H. Lock, solo teacher at Oeo. who is joining the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces; Miss M. Youngson. .sole teacher at Lower Mangorei; Miss S. Jenkins, assistant at Auroa; and Miss T. Woodriiffe, assistant at Okaiawa.

S. Whit combe, secretary to the Board, in the sad bereavement that he had sustained in the death of his daughter and also conveying to Mr J. T.
