STRATFORD'S, LIGHT.
[To The Kr<non Post.] Sir,—hi justice to Mr Climie, and having a 'knowledge of the facts, I fool bound to correct an orror miulo in the summary of your loading article, on the electric light question, lu your summary you state. ’’No alternative lighting scheme yet presented for the Council’s consideration has been shown to be a payable proposition.” Mr Climie’s hydro-electric scheme to produce 300,00.) units per annum, ‘would, on the figures ••>Uy* jmiitM'io the Cihmcii,’ l jlrodufce 'an m- , conic at £*2,000 fDr the,' I nf |uniti' I Tf aVidihcf 1 KW lrt a'dd^ to the enst, (,;[ f tldp for lend easements and other outgoings, tairi proposition would still show an income of something in the neighbourhood of Ci .00') per annum. These hgures are, of course, based on normal jv-ine* • for material and labour. It. would not pay":(x> instal this plant at the present time, any more than it would par, do ipstaljiui ,-eytra Diesel engine to the plant on which the poll will be ta^pto-morrow. It may b contended’that the output of the above plant, more than is, required roi Stratford, ajid if only the town was .‘supplied’ this probably would be the case at. present, but Mr Clinne stales that current could be suppl ed tor light ’apd poiyer -for ft radius of some .Is, 280 horsq-p^vv,wj #t egyh- v $ 1 iji illi oji, p pits dCni,?npuig,,ypujfj f ;, if, ( ,- ( np,cg.s.^nry r , be with pp.-.a vorggQ; tffppfcv. pi ,s|(j,dgp units with bothj SCta.in operation. I state,,the full capacity of the plant to indicate the power available, but of course, it would be necessary t' make the full installation at the out set. Mr Climie installed a hydroelectric station at Tauranga, almost identical with that ho recommended for Stratford.—l am, etc.
W. P. KIRKWOOU. Stratford, 24th Ausru&t. 1916. (Our correspondent hits the crux of the whole question when lie says. "It may be contended that the outpii 1 of tlio above-mentioned plant is nior than is required for Stratford, etc." The plant referred to could only be successful if the Council formulated a scheme applicable to both Borough and County, and our article only dealt with schemes suitable for Borough We contend tha ' it is not the function of a Borough Council to ask their ratepayers to raise money and pledge their security for a work part of which is to beliefs a county. Mr Climie's hydro-electric scheme is too elaborate and too costly for consideration. —Ed. S.E.P.)
