CARDIFF SCHOOL CONCERT

At the Cardiff School on 'lhnrsday night, a very enjoyable and successful concert and dance in aid ot the Bel-

gian and School Funds was held. Notwithstanding the short period of training which the scholars received, they acquitted themselves in a very creditable manner, reflecting great credit upon their teachers. the upper classes’ rendering of the “Sweet Bells of O.sley” and “Massa’s in the Cold Cold Cround,” was a complete

surprise to the audience, inasmuch as they littU' expected such high-grade part singing from children. The ‘‘little tots” action song “The Old Man from Over the Sea” was, perhaps, the best executed of all, while the Sweed, ish Drill by two squads of children (boys and girls) was done with P l °" Vision. Master Lance Lord gave a well rendered recitation,,and Miss ami M aster Ferguson delighted the audience with their dancing of the Highland Fling, receiving an encore, and being requested to repeat their performance later in the'evening. A duet by Mr and Mrs Bicheno concluded the school section of the programme. The adults programme was as successful as the children s, although several performers from Stratford were unable to be present. Mr Belton’s recitation won great applause, and he was forced to respond to an encore, as did the songs by Mis Green well and Messrs Coldwell. Mrs Hancock’s sweet singing also received an encore, while songs by Miss Millcox and Mr Bicheno wore loudly applauded. After the concert, the room was cleared, and, supper over, dancing began and continued until past midnight, Messrs Prebblo Bros, supplying the music. The committee are obliged to Misses Rogers and Coldwell and Mr Prebble for supplying accompaniments to the performers during the evening, and to the ladies who t 0 kindly provided the refreshments.

The proceeds from the concert totalling Co, will be divided equally between the two funds after the expenses are paid.

Quito a number of Cardiff farms liavc changed hand;-; of late, and in consequence, the attendance of pupils at the local school has been considerably increased. One newly-arrived family can boasted having six sons fighting for their King and Country, which surely must bo a record for the Dominion. Good luck to them! Mrs Don Cameron, wife of our genial factory manager, who has been on holiday, returns this evening. The heavy rains of late are having a had effect on the roads, the Dote and Opunako Hoads in particular being in a bad state. The annual mooting of the local factory is to he held on August 28th. It is understood that with to-day‘s payment, the factory has paid out Is 8d for the past season’s output. Quito a number of farmers have lost cows this season through calving, some losing as many as two and three from their herd. This may be expected with the weather experienced of late.
