THE GRAND NATIONAL HURDLES. (Notes by “Cicero.”) The chief attraction at Riccarton to-morrow, will be the Grand National Hurdles of £IBSO, 2V miles. This event is the second “leg” of the doubles, several of the candidates having been backel for a lot ol money with the winner of the Steeplechase (Waimai). By winning the Trial Hurdles Kooya lias earned a penalty of eight pounds, which put the daughter of Signalman at the top ol the handicap with 11.3, not a prohibitive weight for one endowed with such pace, and a natural stayer. Crib (11.2) ran a creditable race in the Jumpers’ Flat, whilst Styrax and Pursefiller performed badly in the same event. Te Onga has been backed to win a “ton” of money witlij Waimai, and was quoted at a ridiculous price with that gelding. He is a genuine stayer, and must be hard lo beat. Leonta is much fancied by many good judges, and certainly j must be in the fighting line. Har- , hour Light would only have to re--1 produce last year’s form, but this is problematical. Master Rcgel only just suffered defeat in the Jumpers Flat. He is a wonderfully quick fencer, stays well, as a win at WanI ganui over'2l miles proves. Frank ■ Flynn will pilot Regel’s son. Maiconi and Tararua Jack, although fancied, yesterday failed to show up. Crown Pearl is much in the boom in Taranaki, but may be troubled by the distance. Art put up a good performance yesterday, and will have a good following to-morrow. Ol those horses lower in handicap Tenacious and Sir Solo have admirers. Possibly 1 Master Hegel, Te Onga and Kooya will get most attention from the judge.
