A private cable received, in New Plymouth reports that Sergeant C, B. Webster’s condition is improving.

A Sydney cablegram states that . private advices report the death in ■London of Mr Frank Prout Mahoney, artist. Mr Stan. Sharp has received word of the death of Ins father, Rev. Joseph Sharp,-which occurred fit 1 Dominion Road, Auckland, this morning. Deceased was one of the oldest ministers in the Methodist Church in New Zealand, having been in the active service of the Church for forty-four years, forty of which were spent in his adopted country. In the course of this lengthy ministry, deceased has been all over the Dominion, and everywhere his sterling qualities -as: a preacher, and a man havs,,b*Bep widely recognised. .For tUs;ipaqtv.three years Takapuna has* bad i the privilege of his advice and companionship, which have gained for him much respect. At the age of 68, heart trouble took him suddenly away, and, passing hence with such a clean record behind him, it may be truly said: “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” There are left to mourn him his widow and two sons and one daughter, vizi., Mr G. W. Sharp (commercial traveller, Auckland j, Mr Stan. R. F. Sharp (Stratford), and Miss E. F. Sharp, who resided with her parents in Auckland, Mr S. Sharp leaves Stratford to-day to attend the funeral obsequies. The death occurred on Sunday evening at Napier, of Air G. P. Wake, barrister and solicitor, at the comparatively early age of 40. The late Mr Wake was well-known in Taranaki, and for several years was in the practice or his profession in Eltham. He was an energetic and public-spirited member of the community, being in the forefront of all matters appertaining to the advancement wf the country as a whole. He was ambitious, also, politically, but was not successful in gaining representative honors, owing, principally to bis health failing him at that stage of his career. In 1905 he unsuccessfully contested tire Pa tea seat. In 1908 lie was a candidate for the Fgmont scat, and with Mr Dive fought a second ballot, but lost the election. A year later lie married Miss Knight, of Riverlca, and in the same year was joined by Mr Gow in the practice of his profession in Eltham. In 1911 he was elected Mayor of Eltham, but after holding office for a while was compelled to relinquish it on account of ill health. Since then Mr Wake Ims lived at Napier in indifferent health. He leaves a widow, but no family. Mr F. W. Wake, recently of Stratford, was a brother of deceased. Referring to the death, the Eltham Argus says: The late Mr Make was very popular while lie resided' in this district, was a fluent and witty speaker, and in the practice of bis profession displayed no mean ability. His death will be regretted by all who knew him, and they will mourn the Ibsf fcf a cheerful ami well respected fib. ■
