Sir Ernest Shackloton has returned after a third fruitless attempt to rescue the-marooned men of his expedt ition at Elephant Island. His ship was forced hack by heavy gales. The ice conditions rendered approach to the Island impossible. Pack ic. j was encountered north of the island, which it was impossible to break. The ship was badly damaged and the engines injured. She had to proceed under sail. Sir Ernest Shackleton recognised it was no use to attempt to force the ice with a light ship. He is awaiting the arrival of the . Discovery, which was being'sent from England.
