The Cabinet has refused the offer of ships cabled on July 29, the price being excessive. PERMANENT SIX-O’CLOCK CLOSING. (Received 10.10 a.m.) Sydney, August 5. The New South Wales Alliance has circularised the political candidates, promising support if they would favour permanent six-o’clock hotel-closing and stating that if they were not favourable the Alliance .would put forward their own candidates. AUSTRALIA WILL SEE IT THROUGH. (Received 10.10 a.m.) Melbourne, August 5. The Commonwealth has cabled the Secretary of State for the Colonies their determination to .continue thenefforts to bring the war to a successful conclusion. Speaking at the war anniversary meeting. Senator Pearce said the combined naval and military expenditure for two years was £5/,698,000. It is officially announced that the Government is sending 150 men to England to assist in munition-making.
