ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
— AMBOY’S SUICIDE. Per Press Association. | Auckland, August 1. A hoy of fifteen years of ago, mimed Claude Henry Waddel, shot himself this morning at Ids home in Devon Street, Eden 'terrace. His father, who is a baker’s driver, returned home for lunch and discovered a note in the boy’s writing, in which the lad stated that he intended to.shoot himself. On making a search, Mr Wadded found tin* dead body of ins son an the. house, the body having evidently shot himself through the heart with a pea rifle. THE MANAKAU FATALITY. TREE FELL ACROSS TENT. Wellington. August d. Further details of the family fatality at Manakau show that Edward Bates, formerly of Petono, with his wife and two sons, aged sixteen and five, were living in a tent in rough country eight miles back from .Mana-
kau. Owing to the dangerous proximity t)jf ‘a big rata tree, it was decided to * khift' camp, and while, the elder son Whs assisting a number of hushfellers to prepare a new site, the huge rata, which was seven feet in diameter, fell ■[right across the tent, bringing tons of earth on top and completely .burying the tent and three inmates. The bodies of the father and son I have been recovered, but the mother’s body has not yet been found. THE MANAKAU FATALITY. Levin, August 5. Tiie body of Mi's Bates, a victim oi the Manakau fatality, was recovered yesterday. It is surmised that the accident occurred at mid-day while the family was at 'dinner. A rata tree, seven feet in diameter, plunged fifty | feet down a hillside, carrying the eii- [ tiro, camp and quantity of spoil. Tins made the recovery of the bodies difficult. Bates came from Petono. The boy killed is aged 5 years. The scene of the accident is eight miles out on a very rough track.
