PERSONAL.

Mr and Mrs H. E. Abraham left by the mail train this morning en route for Christchurch on a few weeks’ holiday trip. The induction of Rev. T. H. Roseveare to Trinity Church, Cambridge, takes place on August 23. He will preach his last sermon in New Plymouth on 20th inst. Mr Arthur Morton was yesterday re-elected chairman of the Mangorei Dairy Company. The company has now attained its majority, and Mr Morton has been chairman continuously since its inception.

Word was received on Thursday afternoon of the death in action of Private William Bean, brother of Mrs Alt’. Grant, of New Plymouth, and grandson of the late Mr W. Cottier. His father, Mr F. de F. Bean, was well-known in Taranaki.

Among the recent casualties are the following:—Wounded, Rifleman A. D. Corkill (Stratford), Private Wilfred D. Cunningham (Manaia), Rifleman Frederick Rogers (Hawera), Rifleman James A. Taylor (Egmont Village), Private David B. Brown (upper Mangorei), Private Percy Grooby (Hautoki).

Private Kay Topp, whose name appeared in Wednesday’s roll of honor, killed in action, was a well-known and much-respected Waitara lad. He was employed at Mr C. Johnstone’s garage, and was one of the many members of the Municipal Band who have gone to the front.

A letter expressing the appreciation of his Majesty the King of the services of the late Private Arthur Vivian Carbines, has been received by his father, Mr R. J. Carbines, of New Lynn, from the War Office. Private Carbines was killed at Gallipoli last August, while attempting to rescue wounded men.

.Mr S. Macalister (of the Stratford legal firm of Ruthorfurd, Macalister and Coleman) who is a platoon-Ser-geant with the 17th Reinforcements at Featherston, left for Camp again this morning,having been on final leave, hast evening, Mr Macalister was entertained by members of the Stratford Club, who took the opportunity of expressing their high regard for him, and appreciation of the sacrifice he is making, and also to mark by a presentation, the fact that he has joined the ranks of the Benedicts. r n ii a urn m——
