The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER SATURDAY, AUGUST 5, 1910. GERMANY'S PEACE OVERTURES.
Whether or not the war will last much] longer it is impossible to say, but it certainly js clear that even tin then i own admission the German Imperial authorities have resigned all hope qt attaining their original purpose, and it is fairly certain that the leaders who are not quite insane would welcome a peace which left Germany anything atj all. The Auckland Star discussing, the original “terms” which Germans suggested a year ago and the marvellously modified programme of to-day, i says the general character of all these' peace proposals, down to the very latest, proves that the Germans have not yet realised the true character of the war or the attitude that the nationsj now arrayed on the side of Belgium 1 and Franco have been compelled to adopt. Behind all these schemes there I is evident the conviction that the Allies arc to lie bought oil, that they will lie content with some sort of compromise, and that it may eve n bo possible to break up the Alliance by a judicious compound of bribery and conciliation. But the universal decision to stand linn which meetings in every corner of the Kmpire yesteruay cin- | phasised, ought to at least cause some ' Germans to wonder il they have not i again been profoundly mistaken. PoKsihly to some extent the blunder is due to the quality of the Hnnnish mind which bases its judgments on its
; own low standards. As the Star also I points out among all their lollies and 1 failures their most fatal errors can be • traced to their inability to underi stand how the treachery and brutality 1 and barbarism that have stained their \ records so indelibly appeal to the rest ! of the world. There hits not been , much likelihood at any time that any j of the Allies would be content with a .1 pp -mature and ineffeelnal peace. There : is less likelihood of such a disaster today than ever.
