The steam'er carried defensive armament, and 'used it against the submarine, which 'drew off, apparently in a sinking condition. The battle lasted half an hour. Several shells pierced the engineers' quarters and others dropped on the vessel's deck. THE SUBMARINE DEUTSCHLAND New York, August 1. The Deutschland, Hying the German flag, left her berth at 5.30 o'clock, flanked by vessels in order to gir.de her. She headed for Virginia Cape, where she may wait before making a dash to sea. The channel'has been dragged, the - authorities fearing mines. Column, who brought the Deutschland in, piloted her out. Ah she left her berth the Deutschland had a great send-off and cheers from the pro-German crews in adjacent boats. (Received 11.10 a.m.) New York, May 3. The Deutschland passed Annapolis, and is expected to reach a favorable submerging point before daylight. They will then determine if they will make a dash. There is great activity among the United States and other watching cruisers.
