Senator Pearce (Minister of ; Defence and act-ing-Prime Minister), said he believed that if the Commonwealth had conscription they could not put any additional men into the field. He had good reason for saying so. He was not prepared to say it would bo true, but three months hence they would be outlining measures for peace. It was time tiio Government was establishing a defence council, with naval and military representatives, whose duty it would bo to watch industrial and commercial developments. He believed that thousands of manufacturers would instal munition-making machinery and would be ready when called upon. Senator Pearce said that in Queensland sue!i a quantity as a million gallons of molasses, which could be used in the manufacture of cordite, was run into the sea annually. He gave other instances of raw material running into the sewers, and affirmed that it was the Council’s business to couidor such matters.
