DARDANELLES AND MESOPOTAMIA COMMISSIONS. QUESTION OF THE PERSONNEL. Press Association—Copyright, Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received 12.20 p.m.) London, July 2G. In the House of Commons Mr Asquifch said it was necessary in choosing the Mesopotamia!! and Dardanelles Commissioners that the members should, if possible, be persons not only not connected directly or indirectly in any sense of responsibility with the matters to be inquired into, and should also be free of bias or party view-point. The names were given merely as a- suggestion, and the Government was willing to accept any proposal for strengthening and amplifying the composition. Mr H. Dalziell thought a younger man than Lord Cromer should be chairman, and he also objected to Lord Hamilton in the suggestion, because he was in receipt of a Government pension. He did not want Government "hacks" on these committees. He asked whether the Commission was .empowered to enquire into the question of the initiation of the Dardanelles operations and the advance on Bagdad. Mr Asquith said, Ire desired that the terms of reference should be as wide as possible. He, did not object to include initiation, although he thought the inquiry into the, conduct of operations include initiation. ' Reply to questions why Ijhere were no naval or military members on the i Commissions, he said , the Govern- : ment considered it better , that the Commission should. be entirely free from naval and military, men,. ,
