THE KAISER’S BURDEN.
Press Association—Copyright, Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. Berne, July 24. Messages from Berlin state that the Kaiser hag made many hurried journeys eastward. He made several speeches on the Somme front. Addressing the wounded at Peronne, he said: “My earnest desire is to take ray place in the trenches and deal the enemy such blows as my ago and strength will permit, but the anscrutablo Almighty has willed otherwise. The leadership of the country and of ray forces on land and sea. has been committed by Divine destiny to my care. The' burden of thinking, deciding, and leading has been laid on me, and my life must nob be risked in the foremost line of battle, where my feelings, if unrestrained, would swiftly carry me. My life must be carefully conserved for Germany’s welfare in order to carry out the duties assigned by God! ’’
Some German comments on the speech savour of lese majeste.
