PROPERTY OWNERS AND WAR. Per Press Association. Wellington, July 24. A meeting of city property-owners to-night discussed the proposed legislation affecting increased rents during the war, and the following resolution was adopted: “That this meeting strongly objects to the legislation as contained in the War Legislation Amendment Bill, on the ground that such legislation is inequitable and unjust.” A Landlords’ Association has been formed to conserve the interest of property owners, and a deputation was appointed to interview the Premier. WELFARE OF THE MAORIS.

The Minister of Public Health today opened a conference with four Maori members of the House of Representatives, Hon. Dr. Pomare and A. T, Xgata, and Messrs T. Parata and Tan Henare, to consider the best steps to be taken to promote the health and well-being of the Maori race. One of the proposals, it is understood, was to establish a general medical service for Maori districts. SEQUEL TO ELOPEMENT. CASE OF ABDUCTION. THE “STAR" BOARDER DOES EIGHTEEN MONTHS’ “HARD.” Auckland, July 25. Alexander MacMahon, who eloped with his landlady’s daughter, a girl under 18, leaving the house by the window late at- night, appeared at the Police Court charged with abduction. He was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour, and to eighteen months’ reformative treateraent.
