TARANAKI WAR RELIEF ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of the Executive Committee was held in the Municipal Chambers this morning. There were ; kpresent—Messrs J. E, Wilson (New Plymouth) in the chair, R. Dunn ("(Farmers' Union, Auroa), E.' Betk-* ■ bessinger (Waitara), J. W. Winheld (Inglewood), T. Crump (Eltham), Wi P. Kirkwood and J. W. McMillan (hon. secretary) Stratford. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Messrs Fleming (Patea), Percival (Inglewpod) and McPhillips (Manaia).
An application was received from tho Salvation Army applying for a contribution towards a sum of £3OOO which the Army is endeavoring to raise for the purpose of extending its work at the various Military Camps. After discussion, it was decided that the matter be referred to the Advisory Board for consideration and recommendation.
It was resolved that the Eltham Patriotic Committee be authorised on behalf of the Association to make allowances to the amount of £2 per week as from Ist July to a de'servih'g case, pending further directions from the Executive.
An extract from the Wellington Evening Post was read to the meeting dealing with the best course to adopt in remitting money for soldiers at the front. The article suggested that all monies should be sent to the N.Z. War Contingent Association in London through the Minister of Internal Affairs or through any banks in the Dominion.
INVESTMENT OF FUNDS. Considerable discussion took place as to the best course to pursue to ensure the payable investment of the large sums' at present 'accumulating and at present earning no interest. It was pointed out that a considerable amount must be kept in a liquid state to provide the necessary immediate expenditure for some time to come.
It was decided to hold the matter over in the meantime, and send a remit to the Advisory Board asking for advice and further information. It was decided to request those committees who at present have funds deposited in the Post Office Savings Bank to keep them there until directed to transfer them by the Executive.
j Tlio question of local investment of funds was discussed, and it was [resolved that the Advisory Board be requested to obtain legislative authority to invest War Funds with Borough Councils by way of loan to be loaned at call. APPLICATIONS FOR LOANS. An application from the Stratford Committee for a loan to a returned soldiers for the purpose of purchasing stock was granted, subject to the necessary securities being given and other conditions complied with. An application from Inglewood was referred to that Committee for an enquiry and report. APPOINTMENT OF SECRETARY. A large number of applications were placed on the table and the selection was left in the hands of the Chairman and Hon. Secretary.
