■A Timaru Press. Association telegram states that H. Petersen, a elderly man with a wife and six children, had his right thigh shockingly smash ed this morning. He was attending to a cable when the dredge swung •round, jambing him between the cable and'tho drum. The leg was amputated close to the trunk. The patient is in a very low state. A motor cyclist named T. A. Bailey at Christchurch to-day (states the Press Association) was charged with carrying a pillion rider in addition to a passenger .in a side-car, contrary to the Council’s by-laws. Evidence was given that now the practice is com.ffiended 1 in America and other coustries as giving stability to the cycle, especially in climbing hills.
