A SUGAR STRIKE.
TROUBLE IN Fiji. Pee Peess Association. Auckland, July 5. The sugar supply is threatened by labor troubles at Fiji.
It is understood that the locomotive drivers, twelve in number, have struck to support a demand for shorter hours. According to a cable received by the Auckland manager, the men have torn up their agreements and struck for a nine-hour day and overtime. The Auckland secretary of the Engine Drivers' Union received the following cable from the strikers: "Warn men against accepting em- | ployment in Fiji. Men here on strike I for an eight-hour day." J Mr Philson states that the men are 'paid £1 ]()s weekly. It is believed | the men affected all came from Sydney. | The Auckland management was asked to supply J twelve men, who, when they have been obtained, will lie shipped to l.<'iji at an early date. There might Jie some embarrassment in regard to the dispatch of sugar, but it would be only temporary. 1
