Germans rained an inferno of shells. The British artillery replied, result; ing in a big "strafe.", Watching the incessant bursting projectives, it was difficult to understand how anything human could survive. The toll of blood was fairly heavy, but not excessive considering the magnitude of the opera ions. Happily a large portion ,of British casualties were) slight I wounds. k
