NAVAL CONTROL OF SHIPPING. WORKING OUT A SCHEME. (Received 10.25 a.m.) Melbourne, June 30. Under the new scheme of naval control of shipping, the Naval Board is considering a proposal that all ships coming to Australia should call at one port only. Now that competition is eliminated by Government control and the, fixing of freights, it is urged there is necessary to call at more than one port. It is proposed to organise the ships so as to enable each port, to be visited in turn. Under the system, it is estimated that each ship visiting Australia will save on an average fourteen days- on a trip. As the cost of running a 5000-ton vessel is roughly £IOO daily, this will mean an annual saving of 14 millions'.
