NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW.
H!CH SCHOOL AGRICULTURAL EXHIBITS, The very valuable practical agricultural woiiC being done by the pupils of tno Palmerston North Hign School was in evidence in an attractive little exhibit of roots, cereals and potatoes grown on the experimental plot in 1* itzhcrbert Street. ’lbis was the first exhiuit made by the pupils at the Winter Show, and it repeated great credit both on them and their instructors. Ihe agricultural class visited the,Show’ under the guidance of their .instructor (.Mr F. t-l. Hpwpll)and spent several prcfejba',,j hours in the Agricultural Department s exhibitions With their customary eagerness to give information ithe heads of the various divisions took the boys round and each lectured in turn on the special exhibit with which he was connected. r I ho boys took copious notes for essay competitions, prizes for which have been donated by Mr T. It. Hodder, chairman of the Aigh School Board, • ART NEE^-iiV/ORK. Mrs M. Hamerton, judge in the art needlework, expressed herself as being well satisfied with the quality of the exhibits. The numbers were goo-, considering the unsettled state brought about by the war. The use of the ,word jll'handsomc” however* made the judged rather difficult, as a 'handsome c||Jnou may not be as well worked asH less striking one. !a point in rcgaMd to the knitted sock division that: might be mentioned was that some of the entries did not contain the Kitchener, or military, heel, hence they were practically put out of competition. The work on 1 10 whole was very good. the apple exhibit. The judge of the apple division, Mr T Horton, of Hastings, in reply to an enquiry, stated that the elfecc of the judging in years past has jeen to secure certain standards in inul. Tills year’s exhibit hail been most noticeable for its freedom from Memish, which was an important improvement on previous years, and the entries were quite equal to previous ones in the matter of quality, colour, form, and size. The freedom from blemish, however, was most noticeable. The display included all the loading varies with the exception of the early classes, with the expansion of the apple industry, planting for the export trade, and there was no reason why it should not become more extensive, than it was now. Mr Horton considered it would he a splendid idea to introduce district displays, as was done a t the recent show in Wellington. This would probably bring competition from Nelson, Central Otago, Hawke s Bay, and other centres, and if so would become an important feature at future shows. It had been tried with great success in Wellington and there was no reason why it should not be the same in Palmerston.
