LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A deputation waited on the Hon. Mr Massey at Wellington to-day (states the Press Association) to urge the necessity of introducing the Daylight Saving Bill. It was urged by the deputation that the principle of daylight-saving was one of practical politics, and it was important for the Government and the people to do all they could to increase production. The Premier, in reply, said the present season was primarily a Avar one, and other legislation ivould have to bo of extreme importance to warrant special attention. He promised to bring the matter "before the Cabinet probably on Monday.

A disease rare to North Otago, and happily of infrequent occurrence elsewhere in the dominion, has made its amongst three Nprth, ..•Otago herds, namely actinomycosis,, commonly known as 'hunpy-’jaw'’ ports the Oamaru Mail). Ihere ate io cases in these herds, bulls and cows being the animals affected, and both have" for' some time been under the observation of Mr F. W. Blair, the local stock' inspector. On Friday afternoon. the veterinary officers from Dunedin, Gore, Invercargill, and Amberley made a visit to the farms. The affliction is a ray fungus Avhich attacks firstly the bone of the jaw, causing the excrescences \vhich give it the name of lumpy-jaiv. If not checked, the disease spreads into other parts of the body, being noticeable m the Uuigs in the form of yelloiv spots. Cases have been known, comparatively rare, where the sickness has made its appearance simultaneously throughout the herd in all parts of the body. The affected beasts are being treated with the prescribed medicine, but "as this is very expensive,, another. co.urse ivould probably /be fallowed in I ‘"killing the ivere they not .valuable. 'This would appear to be a case Avhere the Agricultural Department might with advantage undertake the cure of the beasts free of expense to the oAvner.;
