THE FIRST BALLOTS,

the names of a dozen Presidential aspirant,* were presented to tho Repnbhean convention, including Senators Uoot '.Sew York), Burton (Uliio), Fairbanks (lutiana). Finally, Senator Fall (New Mexico), urged the nomination of that colossal figure of American manhood, Roosevelt whose name was grouted ivith cheers, .".nd some hisses. The demonstration was confined chiefly to the galleries, where women tore the decorations from the j wails and waved them over the heads of the crowds. Comparatively few' of the delegates participated. After forty minutes of inarching and cheering, order was restored. The first ballot of the Republican •leaders stood: Hughes 253, Weeks 105, Root 103, Cummins 85, Burton 77, Fairbanks 74, Sherman 68, Roosevelt (15. The number of votes necessary to a final choice is 193. j At the second ballot Hughes gaiued 75, Roosevelt 16, Fairbanks 14, The Convention adjourned till Saturday. Prior to his own nomination, Mr Roosevelt recommended Senator Lodge as a compromise candidate. The regular Republicans refused to consider the proposal, insisting on Mr Hughes, it, ig generally agreed that the result I means the inevitable return of Prosi..dent. Wilson.-'
The Bepublicahs have nominated Mr Fairbanks for. the vice-president.
Mr Hughes has resigned Ins judgeship in the'Supreme Court. " ■ The Progressives have elected Captain John Barker of Lonissiana, as vice-president.
