The results generally have been in our favor. In the whole sector the artillery is active on both sides. The situation af Hodge is unchanged. . .. ■ ... A French official report says that on the left bank of the Meuse artillery activity is intense in the sector at Hill 304 and Tn the region of Chattancourt. ' i ■ On the right bank, the cneiriy, after a violent bombardment, made successive attacks oh our positions west and east of Thiaumont farm. All the attacks failed imder machine gun ajnd curtain fire. There is violent bombardment west of Pont-a-Mousson.
FRENCH HEROISM AT FORT VAUX. [UwiTirU P«KSi Amooiation. I Paris, June 9. Heroic Major Ronjnal and his men hold the cellars below the ruins of Fort Vaux to the last. What they underderwent can scarcely be imagined, for the bombardment m -i-avy shells w r as incessant and terrific. There were also six infantry assaults' in twelve hours on Monday, wherein two divisions were employed, all being repulsed. The Germans, after a hundred days, have not yet reached the second line of the French defence. A communique states: Successive attacks on our positions west and east of Thiaurnont farm failed under curtain fire. ON THE BRITISH FRONT. NO CHANCE AT HOOCE. London, June 9. General Haig reports: The situation at Hooge is unchanged, no infantry actions having taken place, the operations being chiefly confined to mining activity elsewhere. Wo conducted a successful raid south of La Bassee, and the occupants of the trenches fled, leaving their dead. FRENCH PROGRESS REPORT. (Received 9.55 p.m.) Paris, June lb A communique states: Wo repulsed violent attacks westward of* Tliiaumont Farm, and there were heavy enemy losses. The enemy entered a trench between the farm, and Cail-lo-te Wood.
