Mr G. N. Curtis left Stratford last night on a health trip to Russell, Bay of Islands. He expects to return to Stratford early in September.
A Sydney cable records the death of Mr W. A. Waddell, a timber merchant of Wellintgon. He arrived in Sydney a fortnight ago, and was taken ill and died in a private hospital.
A London cable states that Engineer Sub-Lieutenant Davidson, of the Naval Reserve, who was a New Zealander, has died of a disease contracted in the Cameroons.
Lieut-Colonel J. C. Freeth, who was awarded the D.S.O. for distinguished service in, East Africa, is a cousin of Mr W. J. Freeth. of Pukearuhe. He went to South Africa as captain with the second New Zealand contingent at the time of the Boer war and was wounded. On recovering he joined the sixth contingent in South Africa, where he remained at the conclusion of the war, having accepted a responsible position in the Deeds Office at Johannesburg, of which he is now chief. Three years ago he risked Now Zealand and tva« married at Wellington.
